To support BetterCloud’s growth strategy, BetterCloud VP of People and Culture Alyxa Lease undertook a company-shaping initiative in 2020. Her goal: strengthen individual and team performance along three avenues—creating a high-performance culture, implementing strong expectations of performance, and maintaining a healthy work environment with consistent core values. Core pillars / achievements: Values. Every fast-growth technology company aiming for category leadership needs high performance internally. Clarity of core values makes this achievable. Alyxa’s team surveyed every employee to learn how high performance was perceived across the workforce. They nominated a Values Committee of top performers who worked out the Core Values. This value set was launched in February 2020, coinciding with the challenges of switching to remote work. “When our workforce needed morale boost in the face of traumatic change, and being forced to disperse geographically, those values held us together as colleagues and as a company,” says Lease. “They are the cultural thread that connects all BetterClouders.” High Performance Culture. Alyxa made this her central focus, implementing Talent Calibrations and robust processes for performance management. “Our company serves the hard-driving universe of software companies, so we understand intense competition,” Lease says. To get the best from their people, and build on their outstanding productivity, she has worked to establish metrics that emphasize accountability. In addition, she has worked to instill a sense of belonging, because employees need to see that the company values them in their diversity. Diversity. Alyxa also spearheaded a drive toward intentional diversity, beginning with an employee-run Diversity Council, and the launch of 5 official ERGs (employee resource groups). These ERGs reflect BetterCloud’s global talent pool. They create communities that encompass black, AAPI, LGBTQIA+, South Asian, Hispanic/Latino, Jewish, and women employees. The ERGs host monthly events and speakers to recognize and support the communities. Giving Back. In 2021, BetterCloud implemented Millie as a giving-back platform, spurring donations of tens of thousands of dollars to a variety of charities and organizations.
